Boycott Letter
I feel that one of the main weapons at our disposal for opposing the
war is economic people power. By this, I mean a boycott of as many
american companies as possible. It's the dollar that has the loudest
voice in America, and if the corporate sector begin to feel the pinch
from us and people like us refusing to buy their products, they will
take notice and perhaps begin making dissenting noises within
America. Remember it was an international boycott which had a huge
effect in ending Apartheid in South Africa.
I've written a sample letter to be sent to the CEOs of as many
American companies as possible. This is just a draft and I'd urge as
many people as possible to print it out and send to the director of
an american company. Or any suggestions as to how it could be
improved will be appreciated and taken on board.
It would also help a lot if people would get the name of the CEO and
the managing director of the Irish division of some companies which
could then be posted on this website as a group resource. If someone
got say 100 letter from people saying that they're boycotting their
company, they'd sit up and take notice.
Anyway, here's the text of the letter:
Address:
Date:
Dear sir/madam,
I write to inform you that from here on in, I will be boycotting the
products and services that your company sells. I am outraged by the
unilateral attitude of the American government to international
affairs, the silence with which the corporate sector of America
implicitly approve of their actions, and the seemingly insatiable
desire of the American government to achieve their will by the use of
military force.
I am increasingly concerned by the language of ‘Pax Americana’ being
used by the current administration as it makes clear that the current
aggression towards Iraq will only be the first of many instances
where the US will take ‘pre-emptive’ action against what it sees as
an emerging threat. This is a recipe for global anarchy where the use
of force shall be seen as the only method to achieve one’s goals. It
is also likely to spur the rise of global terrorism as the US
destroys nation after nation. Terrorism will be the only weapon
available to the population to oppose the imperialist aggression of
the US after their government, military and infrastructure have been
destroyed.
As long as this aggressive stance persists, I feel obliged to boycott
all American products. As this aggressive stance and the silence of
the American corporate sector increases, the hostility that your
nation and companies will experience, will grow. I would like to
remind you that I am only one of many people in Ireland and indeed
all over the world, who feel the same way.
If you feel that I have misrepresented the stance of your company in
relation to the issues I have mentioned above, please contact me.
Yours sincerely
