A vigil to protest peacefully against the use of Shannon Airport by US military planes illegally transferring civilians to secret detention centres around the world without charge or trial.
The Government must admit that Shannon Airport was used as a launching pad for rendition operations by the CIA and act to ensure this can never happen again. Rather than rely on assurances from foreign administrations, the Irish Government must be confident that our own systems and laws can prevent this illegal practice.
Although President Obama's Executive Order 'Ensuring Lawful Interrogations' ends the CIA's programme of long-term secret detention it does not end the practice of rendition. The order allows the CIA to use detention facilities on a short-term basis, or to use foreign-controlled facilities to detain and interrogate individuals.
Join this peaceful vigil to call for the indefinite end to rendition through Ireland.
Who:
Amnesty International activists join with other human rights defenders.
Where:
Shannon Airport. Meet at small roundabout just before the gantry (airport entrance). All welcome.
When:
Sunday 13 September 2009. 2pm - 3pm

Want to be part of something….unexpected?
Host: Amnesty International Ireland
Date: Saturday, 19 September 2009
Time: 12:00 - 15:00. Meet at midday!
Location: The gates of Stephen’s Green (just inside Fusiliers Arch)
We’re looking for as many people as possible to get involved in a flash mob that we’re organising in Dublin city centre on 19 September.
A flash mob is a large group of people who seem to suddenly appear out of nowhere in a public place, strike a pose or perform an action together and then, just as suddenly, disappear back into the crowds.
We will meet inside the gates of Stephen’s Green at midday and will only then be told what we'll be doing (all very clandestine), then head off into the city to raise public awareness about the devastation caused by the conflict in Gaza and southern Israel last Dec/Jan and the lack of meaningful action taken by our government or any other to demand truth and reparations for the victims. We will remind people that without their voice, governments can continue to turn a blind eye.
