Amnesty International Galway are having a Guantanamo Bay event  sat 16/1

It is going to be as follows:

Guantanamo Bay Street Theatre:
Shop Street at 1pm, Sat 16th January.

2 Army officers will be marching 3 Guantanamo Bay detainees. They will stop and make the detainees kneel down.
Then 4 Amnesty activists will be coming and scare away the army officers holding large signs with messages such as: "Stop Rendition", "Close Guantanamo".

If the weather permits it, it will start in Eyre Square and will repeat down Shop Street.

Amnesty volunteers will be getting the public to sign petitions calling on the Government to advocate among our European neighbours to accept detainees for resettlement to ensure the closure of Guantanamo Bay
Detention Centre; and calling on the Government to follow up their "commendable work" (? my question mark) on resettlement by closing all loop-holes in domestic legislation that has allowed renditions to be facilitated through Ireland..

If you need more information on this event please contact Marie-Anne, of Galway AI on 086 792 40 95.

The Irish Anti-War Movement (IAWM) will hold a demonstration this Friday January 29th at 5pm outside the British Embassy in Ballsbridge, Dublin. The protest has been organised to coincide with the appearance of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair before the Chilcott inquiry, where he will answer questions about his role in launching the war on Iraq in 2003.

The protest will coincide with a series of protests taking place in Britain at the Chilcott inquiry and on the previous day (Thursday 28th) at the international conference on Afghanistan, hosted by current British Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.

The IAWM, like its British counter-part, the Stop the War Coalition, believe any serious inquiry into Mr Blair's role in the Iraq war could only conclude that he told multiple and deliberate lies to justify an aggressive and illegal war.

Similarly, the British and Irish anti-war movements believe that the international conference on Afghanistan being hosted by Gordon Brown, the day before Mr Blair's appearance at the inquiry, is a cynical attempt to re-brand the hugely unpopular war in Afghanistan as the "good war," when it is one equally as immoral as that fought in Iraq.

Sat 30th January 6.00pm, Central Hotel, South Great George’s Street, Dublin.

Press Release
GAAW TO HOLD ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The Galway Alliance Against War will hold its annual general meeting on
Wednesday 3rd February at 8pm upstairs in Richardson’s of Eyre Square
Galway.

Last year was a very busy and wide-ranging one for the local peace group.
Not only did its members play a major role in mobilising humanitarian help
for the Palestinians of Gaza last February, but they were to the fore in the
Galway No 2 Lisbon Campaign back in September.

In between GAAW has continued to articulate its principled opposition to warplanes participating in air shows over Galway.  Readers will recall that GAAW organised one of its “99 Red Balloon Peace Events” to express its disagreement with the RAF’s Red Arrows air display in June.

On New Year’s Day GAAW kicked off the new decade with a New Year’s Peace Party which included a telephone link-up with “the bravest woman in
Afghanistan”, Malalai Joya, an Afghani MP, who opposes not only foreign
occupation of her country and the fundamentalist Afghani government but also their opponents, the Taliban.
