October has been the worst month in Afghanistan for US and Nato fatalities, and 2010 is the worst year for Afghan civilian deaths, since the invasion in 2001.
Meanwhile, the British government's savage cuts in public services have brought into sharp relief the lunacy of spending £5 billion a year on a pointless and unwinnable war, which David Cameron says will be increased in the coming years.
