Help the refugees and stop the wars fuelling the crisis - UNPUBLISHED OP ED SENT TO BROADSHEETS

Help the refugees and stop the wars fuelling the crisis

The UN says that the overwhelming majority of refugees are fleeing from intolerable conditions and devastation caused by wars in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and beyond. In all of these wars, western countries have played a central role.

Iraq and Afghanistan were destabilised by the US-led airstrikes, occupations and the installations of sectarian proxy governments.

The NATO bombing of Libya in 2011, in a direct attempt by western powers to influence the course of the Arab Revolutions, contributed directly to the civil war and social breakdown that has allowed that country to become the main conduit for refugees fleeing across the Mediterranean. These refugees have been further exploited and victimized by heartless traffickers, leading to thousands of deaths on the shores of Europe.

The current Syrian conflict, from which most of the refugees are fleeing, began as a brutal suppression of peaceful protests by Assad’s forces, but quickly became a civil war. For some time now, the situation has developed into a proxy war between the west and Russia as part of a new cold war centered on Ukraine.

The rise of Isis was fueled by post-occupation US policies in Iraq, not least by installing Shia leaders and punishing many Sunni men in prison camps like Camp Bucca in Southern Iraq. Continued ongoing western funding, arming and training of opposition groups in Syria, mainly through the conduit of Saudi Arabia, only exacerbates the horror.

Erodoğan and Netanyahu Declare War

Erodoğan and Netanyahu Declare War

By James Petras

The rulers of the two most powerful authoritarian regimes in the Middle East are launching major wars to reconfigure the Middle East.   Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has declared war  by proxy  on Iran, announcing full-scale military mobilization within Israel (July 27 -29) and organizing the biggest political campaign of ultra Zionist Jews in Washington.   The purpose of this two-pronged propaganda blitz is to defeat the recently signed US-Iranian agreement and start another major Middle East war.   Ultimately, Netanyahu intends to take care of his ‘Palestinian Problem’ for good: complete the conquest and occupation of Palestine and expelling the Palestinian people from their homeland – the single most important foreign policy and domestic goal of the Jewish state.   In order to do this, Israeli leaders have had to systematically campaign for the destruction of the Palestinians regional supporters and sympathizers – Iraq, Libya, Syria, Lebanon and Iran.

Stop bombing Syria

Revelations that British fighter pilots have been secretly bombing Syria under US command reveal both the British Government's contempt for democracy and its subservience to Washington foreign policy. The news makes a mockery of  promises of a debate and vote in parliament on the issue.

Since the start of the "war on terror", Jihadi organisation has spread from small pockets of Central Asia across whole swathes of the globe. Western bombing in Syria will do nothing to halt Isis. On the contrary it will add fuel to the flames of war engulfing the whole region, and it will lead to an increase in terrorist attacks.

'Stop the War' demands the British Government publicly commits to an immediate end to British bombing of Syria.

More widely we call for an end to military and diplomatic support for Saudi Arabia in its war on Yemen and for a stop to the bombing campaign in Iraq.

PLEASE: sign the petition against the British bombing of Syria- any country can sign!

UK Government refuses to stop spying on rendition victims

UK Government refuses to stop spying on rendition victims

The UK government is refusing to guarantee that it will not misuse the intercepted lawyer-client communications of two rendition victims in their legal cases again the British government.

Yunus Rahmatullah and Amanatullah Ali, from Pakistan, are bringing legal action against the British government for its complicity in their torture and rendition. The men were captured in Iraq in 2004 by British forces, before being rendered by the US to Bagram prison, Afghanistan. They endured a decade of secret US detention and torture in Bagram before their release last May without charge or trial.

The UK Government is refusing to agree to a request by the men to take “reasonable” steps not to “read, listen to or otherwise use” their communications with their lawyers. Those communications are confidential, and enjoy protected status under the longstanding principle of legal professional privilege (LPP).

The men’s request is the latest in a series of recent developments on the issue of government interception in legal cases. In recent weeks the UK has signed a undertaking not to read or listen to any legally-privileged material relating to another rendition victim, Abdul-Hakim Belhaj from Libya. That agreement, nearly identical to the one submitted by Mr Ali and Mr Rahmatullah, came after the government admitted in the course of Mr Belhaj’s case that UK intelligence agencies’ policies regarding the monitoring of lawyer-client conversations were unlawful.
