A LEADING Israeli academic and film-maker who has defied his country’s government by advocating a boycott against it will be in Ireland this week to support a new campaign group.

Professor Haim Bresheeth will be joined by renowned Palestinian doctor and scholar Ghada Karmi at the launch of Academics for Palestine.
The new group has organised more than 120 Irish academic signatories on a pledge to boycott Israeli institutions until Palestinian rights are respected. It is is part of an international campaign initiated by Palestinian civil-society organisations.

Professor Bresheeth and Dr Karmi will be joined at the launch by Dr Conor McCarthy, lecturer in English at NUIM Maynooth, and Dr Andy Storey, lecturer in politics and international relations at UCD.

On Thursday, Academics for Palestine will also release its list of signatories, publish an informative 28-page booklet on the academic boycott and reveal the close, EU-funded connections between some Irish researchers and the Israeli military/security apparatus.

Professor Bresheeth and Dr Karmi will be attending a lunchtime event, chaired by Dr Ronit Lentin, in Trinity College Dublin on Thursday. They will otherwise be available for interview in Dublin from 8pm Wednesday to 5.30pm Thursday.

PROTEST THE JAILING OF MARGARETTA D’ARCY AT DÁIL EIREANN, WEDNESDAY 29 JANUARY 2014, 1.00 - 1.45PM

IAWM PRESS RELEASE – 29 JANUARY 2014

• PROTEST THE JAILING OF MARGARETTA D’ARCY AT DÁIL EIREANN, WEDNESDAY 29 JANUARY 2014, 1.00 - 1.45PM.

The IAWM issued a statement calling on its members and supporters to join the protest / vigil at Dáil Eireann today, 29 January from 1.00 - 1.45pm.

The statement noted:

The IAWM condemns the imprisonment of Margaretta D’Arcy, a 79-year-old writer and activist who is suffering from Parkinson’s disease and cancer, for her brave stance against the continued use of Shannon Airport by the US military in its pursuit of futile wars abroad, and calls on the Justice Minister Alan Shatter to release her.

Jim Roche, PRO of the IAWM said:

“We support Margaretta D’Arcy’s stance against wars waged by the US military and the brave action she took at Shannon airport in trying to draw attention to the use of an Irish national airport in the pursuit of such wars which have brought much suffering to millions of people abroad. Shannon Airport has also been used in the CIA rendition programme thus implicating Irish people in the torture of innocent people in Guantanamo Bay.

It is truly shocking that the Irish Government can jail a 79-year old woman who is suffering from Parkinson’s and cancer yet has persistently refused to search US war planes at Shannon, one of which recently was found to be heavily armed, and has failed miserably to jail anyone related to the activities in the banking sector that has brought the country such ruin.

PROTEST AT DÁIL THIS WEDNESDAY, 22 JANUARY, 1.00 - 1.45PM: FREE MARGARETTA D'ARCY - END USE OF SHANNON AS A WARPORT.

“We support Margaretta D’Arcy’s stance against wars waged by the US military and the brave action she took at Shannon airport in trying to draw attention to the use of an Irish national airport in the pursuit of such wars which have brought much suffering to millions of people in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Palestine. We know, from various polls, that a majority of the Irish public object to the use of Shannon Airport as a military hub and we are sure that most will also be outraged at the jailing of a peaceful 79-year-old frail woman. We urge them to attend the various protests around the country and to join us in calling for an end to the use of Shannon airport as a US military hub and for the immediate release of Margareta D'Arcy.”
