BDS AS A PRECURSOR TO LASTING JUSTICE AND PEACE FOR PALESTINIANS - UNPUBLISHED LETTERS SENT TO THREE IRISH BROADSHEETS

IAWM PRESS RELEASE 24 MAY 2021

UNPUBLISHED LETTERS SENT TO ALL THREE IRISH BROADSHEETS ON PALESTINE

BDS AS A PRECURSOR TO LASTING JUSTICE AND PEACE FOR PALESTINIANS

PALESTINIANS UNITED ACROSS ALL OF PALESTINE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN DECADES

Sir,

the ceasefire in the latest escalation of horrific violence between Palestinians and Israelis is most welcome. Now Israelis can revert to their peaceful lives of ignoring the existence of their fellow human beings whose lands they occupy while Palestinians will continue to experience the slow violence of occupation, apartheid, ethnic cleansing, siege and the denial of their basic human rights.

This has to change and one senses from the resistance across all of Palestine and the worldwide solidarity that there is a new awakening. Boycott Divestments and Sanctions (BDS) is the most appropriate form of civil society solidarity we can offer and the Irish Government, institutions and corporations should now adopt this policy as a precursor to lasting justice and peace for the Palestinians.

Yours etc.

Sir,

right wing Israeli mobs, emboldened by ultranationalist rhetoric from reactionary Israeli politicians, are attacking indigenous Palestinians in their homes and on the streets in Lydda, Acre, Haifa, and other cities within 1948 Israel. Palestinians within Israel, for so long subdued, out of sight and out of mind of the dominant Israeli body politic are awakened to their own plight and that of their oppressed fellow Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah in East Jerusalem and in Gaza as was witnessed by their solidarity strike and continued protests this week.

IRISH GOVERNMENT MUST EXPEL THE ISRAELI AMBASSADOR AND ENACT THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES BILL

IRISH ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT (IAWM)

PRESS RELEASE – 22 MAY 2021

• IRISH GOVERNMENT MUST EXPEL THE ISRAELI AMBASSADOR AND ENACT THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES BILL
• END THE SIEGE OF GAZA
• END THE OCCUPATION OF PALESTINE
• BOYCOTT ISRAEL

The IAWM is supporting the multiple Palestinian solidarity events happening around Ireland today and members of its Steering Committee will be participating in the main event at the Spire in Dublin at 2pm.

The list of events is here:
https://www.ipsc.ie/event/global-day-of-action-for-palestine-irish-even…

The IAWM encourages all its members to attend one of these events provided that they do not have Covid or any symptoms, that they wear a mask, socially distance, follow all HSE guidelines regarding meeting up and follow the guidance of the stewards.

The IAWM welcomes the unconditional ceasefire between the Israeli Military and Hamas and other groups but says that the underlying conditions that caused this upsurge in violence remains. That is ultimately the denial to Palestinians of their basic human rights which is manifest through evictions, continued ethnic cleansing, land theft, discrimination, arbitrary detention and imprisonment and even extrajudicial killings - all perpetrated by a violent, racist apartheid regime.

The Irish Government must now censure the Israeli Government by enacting the Occupied Territories Bill and by expelling the Israeli Ambassador. Such actions would send a strong message of solidarity to the Palestinian people and warn Israel that it can no longer ignore international law and act with impunity.

Fatin Tamini a Palestinian member of the IAWM Steering Committee and Chair of the IPSC said:

DAY OF ACTION FOR YEMEN THIS MONDAY – STOP THE WAR NOW!

IRISH ANTI WAR MOVEMENT BULLETIN – 23 JANUARY 2021

DAY OF ACTION FOR YEMEN – STOP THE WAR NOW!

The IAWM is asking all its members and supporters to join with multiple organisations and activists around the world to support the Day of Action for Yemen which occurs on this Monday 25 January.

There are multiple Covid-safe online events happening around the world including the UK’s Stop the War Coalition Global Online Rally at 7pm on Monday which you can register for through this link. The speakers include

Ahmed Al-Babati (British-Yemeni Soldier)
Dr. Shireen Aladeimi
Apsana Begum MP
Jeremy Corbyn MP
Danny Glover (Actor)
Daniele Obono (French National Assembly Member)
Yanis Varoufakis (MeRA25 Secretary-General)
Dr. Cornel West

Over 230,000 Yeminis have been killed in this war which has also resulted in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis whereby 24 million people including 80% of Yemini children (12.3 million) are dependent on and in desperate need of humanitarian aid. The country is in danger of a massive famine which could devastate an entire generation of Yemenis.

This catastrophe was all avoidable.

Western Governments have supported the bombing of Yemen by the Saudi / UAE coalition. The UK based Campaign against the Arms Trade (CAAT) estimates that over £15B. worth of weapons have been sold by the US, Britain, Canada, Spain, France and Italy to Saudi Arabia since the war started.

Why cannot such monies be used to feed the starving and cure the sick instead?

While there may be atrocities and human rights abuses on both sides of the internal conflict within Yemen as documented by Amnesty International in this report - https://www.amnesty.org/en/countries/middle-east-and-north-africa/yemen… - there is no doubt that this horrific war has been exacerbated and prolonged by the interference and support for one side by western governments particularly those of the US and Britain.

This must stop now!

RELEASE JULIAN ASSANGE NOW!

IRISH ANTI WAR MOVEMENT PRESS RELEASE 07 SEPTEMBER 2020

• STOP THE EXTRADITION OF JULIAN ASSANGE TO THE USA

• STOP THE PSYCHOLOGICAL TORTURE OF JULIAN ASSANGE

• DEFEND THE FREEDOM OF THE PRESS AND WHISTLE-BLOWERS

• IRISH GOVERNMENT MUST SUPPORT THE ‘FREE ASSANGE CAMPAIGN’

• RELEASE JULIAN ASSANGE NOW!

Today, 7th September 2020 is a grim day for press freedom, the rights of whistle-blowers and human rights generally.

Award winning journalist and founder of Wikileaks Julian Assange is facing a 175-year prison sentence simply for publishing US government documents revealing evidence of war crimes and human rights abuses. If extradited to the USA he will be tried on a century old Espionage Act that has never previously been applied to journalists. The documents released by Wikileaks were published widely by such media outlets as the Guardian, The New York Times, Der Spiegel, Le Monde and many others.

Many prominent US politicians have sought to excoriate Julian Assange’s good character. Current Democratic Presidential nominee Joe Biden called him a terrorist. Other US politicians, including former Secretary of State Hilary Clinton and Sarah Palin, called for his assassination. These comments alone should question how he can possibly receive a free and fair trial in the USA?

Numerous Human Rights organizations including Amnesty international, Reporters Without Borders, the International Federation of Journalists (British National Union of Journalists & Australian Union of Journalists, MEAA) have called for the extradition to be halted.

In February 2020, 118 Doctors and Psychologists, from 18 different countries – Doctors for Assange – penned an open letter in the Lancet Magazine noting his dire state of health and calling for an end to the psychological torture he has suffered while being incarcerated at the Ecuadorian Embassy and at Belmarsh Prison.
