IAWM Bulletin

IRISH GOVERNMENT MUST EXPEL THE ISRAELI AMBASSADOR

PRESS RELEASE – 18 MAY 2021

• IRISH GOVERNMENT MUST EXPEL THE ISRAELI AMBASSADOR
• CEASEFIRE NOW – END THE MASSACRE ON GAZA!
• SUPPORT THE GENERAL STRIKE THROUGHOUT PALESTINE TODAY

The IAWM condemns the extreme violence of the Israeli state against the people of Palestine which escalated on Monday 10th May following a threat of eviction of hundreds of Palestinians from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of East Jerusalem and an unprovoked attack by the Israeli Military on peaceful worshippers in the Al Aqsa Mosque, Islam’s third most sacred place.

The subsequent rockets from Gaza and the attacks by the Israel military has now led to multiple deaths and injured across the territories, demolished buildings and homeless families fleeing for safety with 200 Palestinians killed in Gaza alone, almost 60 children and 34 women, with 1,230 injured.

There have also been vicious attacks by the Israeli armed forces and colonial settlers against the indigenous Palestinian population throughout the occupied territories and within Israel itself.

The IAWM calls on its members to express solidarity and support for the General Strike called across Palestine today, Tuesday 18 May 2021, which is being coordinated by the High Follow Up Committee for Arab Citizens of Israel (in Palestine 48) and in the West Bank by the General Union of Teachers (GUPT). We stand full square with all Palestinians at this grave time.

Multiple actions can be taken. See here - https://bdsmovement.net/news/solidarity-with-palestinian-general-strike-...

In addition the IAWM is asking its members to attend the protest at the Israeli Embassy in Dublin called for 4pm today. If attending please wear a mask, observe social distancing and all HSE guidelines for outdoor meeting and follow the guidance of the stewards.

SAVE SHEIKH JARRAH - IRISH GOVERNMENT MUST NOW SANCTION ISRAEL OVER ITS CONTINUED ETHNIC CLEANSING OF PALESTINE

IRISH ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT

PRESS RELEASE ON ISRAELI ASSAULT ON PALESTINIANS IN JERUSALEM – 11 MAY 2021

• ISRAEL MUST STOP ITS ETHNIC CLEANSING OF JERUSALEM AND ITS HAR-RASSEMENT OF PALESTINIANS
• ACTIONS HAVE POTENTIALLY FOMENTED YET ANOTHER ISRAELI / HAMAS WAR
• ALL MILITARY ACTION MUST CEASE
• IRISH GOVERNMENT MUST NOW SANCTION ISRAEL

The latest violence in occupied Jerusalem is a product of Israel’s decades long continued policy of ethnic cleansing and harassment of indigenous Palestinians.

Israel is threatening to ethnically cleanse Palestinian families from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah, occupied Jerusalem. Backed by the state and its discriminatory laws, settler groups have claimed ownership of the land in Sheikh Jarrah and implemented a creeping takeover of Palestinian homes, aided and abetted by Israeli courts and the security forces. The plans to forcibly dispossess the families is part and parcel of Israel's ongoing policy of altering the demographic balance of the city, by ethnically cleansing Palestinians, while simultaneously providing financial and political support for illegal Jewish-only settlements built on stolen Palestinian land.

It is quite understandable and morally justified that Palestinians have protested against this threat as any group so threatened anywhere in the world would do. The Israeli State has responded with fa-miliar brutality attacking both protesters on the streets and worshippers in Islam’s third most sacred shrine, the Al-Aqsa Mosque, injuring hundreds.

World leaders as usual have uttered muted, meaningless responses. Imagine a Christian cathedral in Europe being attacked by military forces in such a discriminatory fashion as was witnessed at Al-Aqsa Mosque yesterday morning. What would the response of world leaders be then?

DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENTS AND THE UN MUST OPENLY SUPPORT THE MYANMAR PROTESTERS / NO RETURN TO MILITARY RULE–RESTORE DEMOCRACY NOW

IRISH ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT PRESS RELEASE ON MYANMAR – 18 MARCH 2021

• SOLIDARITY WITH PROTESTERS IN MYANMAR
• NO RETURN TO MILITARY RULE – RESTORE DEMOCRACY NOW
• END THE ARRESTS, TORTURE AND KILLINGS
• DEMOCRATIC GOVERNMENTS AND THE UN MUST OPENLY SUPPORT THE MYANMAR PROTESTERS

Terror and courage in Myanmar
Myanmar (formerly Burma) is a Southeast Asian nation of more than 100 ethnic groups, bordering India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand. The shocking genocide of the Rohingya people, which tarnished Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Chi's reputation, recently brought Myanmar to the world's attention.

The people of Myanmar are living an ongoing nightmare since 1 February 2021, when the mililtary declared falsely that the election on 8 November 2020 was fraudulent. Min Aung Hlaing, the commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces, the Tatmadaw, launched a violent coup – the first since 1988 - to overthrow the election, which had been won in a landslide by Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy. In late 2019, Aung San Suu Kyi unsuccessfully defended this same general and the military against accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice in the Hague. Her collaboration with and attempt to co-govern with the military proved fruitless, as she and other parliamentarians including president Win Myint were immediately arrested under trumped-up charges following the coup on 1st February. The military is now ruthlessly dismantling civilian rule and reversing the steps begun about ten years ago towards democracy. Two officials of the elected government are among five people known to have died after being tortured.

Unprecedented unity among the protesters

• YEMINI PEOPLE ARE STARVING TO DEATH - LIFT THE US BACKED SAUDI BLOCKADE NOW!

• CHARITY NOT ENOUGH – END THIS INHUMANE WAR NOW!

• IRISH GOVERNMENT SHOULD ONLY ALLOW HUMANITARIAN U.S. FLIGHTS THROUGH SHANNON

UNPUBLISHED LETTER SENT TO FIVE NEWS OUTLETS IN IRELAND ON 11 MARCH, NOW ISSUED AS A PR

Dear Editor,

people in Yemen are starving to death. They are dying in hospitals, homes and on the roadsides fleeing to safety. Many severely undernourished children who make it to the safety of the overcrowded Hodeidah Hospital on the Red Sea coast still die as their bodies are so weakened with starvation. 400,000 Yemini children are at risk of dying according to the director of the UN World Food Programme. 11 million children need aid in the world’s worst humanitarian disaster. The UN estimates that 50% of health-care facilities have shut down in a conflict that has displaced more than 3.6 million people, over 80% of which are women and children. The Coronavirus pandemic runs rampant among such dysfunctionality.
