Terror and courage in Myanmar
Myanmar (formerly Burma) is a Southeast Asian nation of more than 100 ethnic groups, bordering India, Bangladesh, China, Laos and Thailand. The shocking genocide of the Rohingya people, which tarnished Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Chi's reputation, recently brought Myanmar to the world's attention.

The people of Myanmar are living an ongoing nightmare since 1 February 2021, when the mililtary declared falsely that the election on 8 November 2020 was fraudulent. Min Aung Hlaing, the commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces, the Tatmadaw, launched a violent coup – the first since 1988 - to overthrow the election, which had been won in a landslide by Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy. In late 2019, Aung San Suu Kyi unsuccessfully defended this same general and the military against accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice in the Hague. Her collaboration with and attempt to co-govern with the military proved fruitless, as she and other parliamentarians including president Win Myint were immediately arrested under trumped-up charges following the coup on 1st February. The military is now ruthlessly dismantling civilian rule and reversing the steps begun about ten years ago towards democracy. Two officials of the elected government are among five people known to have died after being tortured.

Unprecedented unity among the protesters

IRISH ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT BULLETIN - 16 MARCH 2021

• CHARITY NOT ENOUGH – END THIS INHUMANE WAR NOW!

UNPUBLISHED LETTER SENT TO FIVE NEWS OUTLETS IN IRELAND ON 11 MARCH, NOW ISSUED AS A PR

Dear Editor,

people in Yemen are starving to death. They are dying in hospitals, homes and on the roadsides fleeing to safety. Many severely undernourished children who make it to the safety of the overcrowded Hodeidah Hospital on the Red Sea coast still die as their bodies are so weakened with starvation. 400,000 Yemini children are at risk of dying according to the director of the UN World Food Programme. 11 million children need aid in the world’s worst humanitarian disaster. The UN estimates that 50% of health-care facilities have shut down in a conflict that has displaced more than 3.6 million people, over 80% of which are women and children. The Coronavirus pandemic runs rampant among such dysfunctionality.

DAY OF ACTION FOR YEMEN THIS MONDAY – STOP THE WAR NOW!

IRISH ANTI WAR MOVEMENT BULLETIN – 23 JANUARY 2021

DAY OF ACTION FOR YEMEN – STOP THE WAR NOW!

The IAWM is asking all its members and supporters to join with multiple organisations and activists around the world to support the Day of Action for Yemen which occurs on this Monday 25 January.

There are multiple Covid-safe online events happening around the world including the UK’s Stop the War Coalition Global Online Rally at 7pm on Monday which you can register for through this link. The speakers include

Ahmed Al-Babati (British-Yemeni Soldier)
Dr. Shireen Aladeimi
Apsana Begum MP
Jeremy Corbyn MP
Danny Glover (Actor)
Daniele Obono (French National Assembly Member)
Yanis Varoufakis (MeRA25 Secretary-General)
Dr. Cornel West

Over 230,000 Yeminis have been killed in this war which has also resulted in a catastrophic humanitarian crisis whereby 24 million people including 80% of Yemini children (12.3 million) are dependent on and in desperate need of humanitarian aid. The country is in danger of a massive famine which could devastate an entire generation of Yemenis.

This catastrophe was all avoidable.

Western Governments have supported the bombing of Yemen by the Saudi / UAE coalition. The UK based Campaign against the Arms Trade (CAAT) estimates that over £15B. worth of weapons have been sold by the US, Britain, Canada, Spain, France and Italy to Saudi Arabia since the war started.

Why cannot such monies be used to feed the starving and cure the sick instead?

While there may be atrocities and human rights abuses on both sides of the internal conflict within Yemen as documented by Amnesty International in this report - https://www.amnesty.org/en/countries/middle-east-and-north-africa/yemen/... - there is no doubt that this horrific war has been exacerbated and prolonged by the interference and support for one side by western governments particularly those of the US and Britain.

This must stop now!
