Donald Trump’s return to the White House on Jan 20th – we need an anti- war movement more than ever

Recent remarks about Canada, Greenland and the Panama Canal by Donald Trump, ahead of his inauguration, are a sharp reminder of the extreme aggressive rhetoric that a Trump term threatens.

Trump came close to direct war with Tehran and tore up a major nuclear deal with Iran in his previous stint as US President.

He has promised he will end the Russia / Ukraine war in 24 hours of his being in the White House. We would welcome a peace deal in Ukraine but have no reason to believe Trump can deliver it based on his hawkish militarism. If he does, he would instrumentalise it based on his declared affinity with Putin.

Who knows where his much-heralded trade war with China will end up, or where that will leave the already rumbling hostilities in the South China Sea.

Finally, and most importantly, Trump wants to push the US even further down the pro-Zionist path and directly support – even more overtly than Biden – Israel’s unspeakable, ongoing genocide of Palestinians and its expansionist war in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and possibly Iran.

Some commentators have noted that Trump is a reckless windbag whose words will be a long way from action. But this does not change the fact that the leader of the most powerful country in the world is on a war path. US ‘foreign policy’ – always about US interests and now under the guise of Making America Great Again – risks becoming even more openly expansionist and imperialist.

No anti-war activist can be indifferent to this.

  1. The Irish Anti War movement stands against Trumpism – his racism, his toxic sexism, his anti-immigrant threats, his militaristic rhetoric. We call on the Irish government to distance themselves from his far-right views. They should refuse to play along with Trumpism on St. Patrick’s Day 2025.
  2. The IAWM will continue to oppose in every way that we can the Russia / NATO/Ukraine proxy war and highlight how the NATO-led militarisation of Europe is a direct threat to Irish neutrality.
  3. We will build on the ever-determined mass movement for Palestine in Ireland to force our government to cease all trade with Israel. We will support every action taken by students, workers, local groups to boycott Israeli goods. We will continue our campaign to stop Shannon and Irish airspace being used for the transport of arms and military equipment to the Zionist state. We will continue to highlight the Irish government’s hypocrisy on this.

Stand with us and the global anti-war movement to stop war and genocide. Make sure that you are on our email list and join us in the fight ahead.
