The situation in Gaza deteriorated further this week. Media reports note that over 400 Gazans were killed in the last two days alone with attacks and destruction on all kinds of civilian infrastructure. Tanks drove into a hospital and killed people sheltering in tents. Two Christian women were killed by Israeli snipers outside a church, an act the Pope described as terrorism.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden’s Government blocked any chance at the UNSC to achieve a ceasefire, even a temporary one. The agreed motion proposed today regarding humanitarian aid is meaningless and will not stop Israel’s bombardment of civilian infrastructure, residential areas and its ethnic cleansing of Gazans from their homes.

As Gazans suffer immense violence and hardship from an occupying power the threat of a regional war looms large.

Meanwhile Israel is achieving little of what it announced – the elimination of Hamas – but much of what it did not announce – the destruction and ethnic cleansing of Gaza, including the mass murder of over 10,000 children.

The Swiss based Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor (https://euromedmonitor.org/en) put the toll of killed and injured on day 74 of the onslaught as 26,612 and 52,390 respectively. These figures represent 1.21% and 2.4% of a total Gazan population of 2.2 million.

If applied to the Republic of Ireland this equates to 61,373 killed and 120,717 wounded, many horribly so with life changing injuries. This is an incredible eighteen times more Gazans killed in 74 days than in 30 years of war in Northern Ireland.

Hundreds of thousands of displaced Gazans are living in tents in appalling conditions, are starving and will likely start dying soon.

Jim Roche, PRO of the IAWM said:

“It just gets worse and worse. It is like the Sabra Shatila massacre of 1982 on steroids, multiplied a thousand times. A Russian Jewish award-winning writer Masha Gessen, recently compared what is happening in Gaza to the massacre in a Jewish ghetto during WW2. She is right. The US alone has the power to stop this. They could turn off the flow of arms to Israel immediately. The Irish Government could do much more than meekly call for a humanitarian ceasefire. It should send out a strong message to the US and the world that Israel must stop this genocidal war on the people of Gaza. It should immediately remove the facility to the US Military at Shannon Airport.”
