STOP THE ESCALATION OF ISRAEL’S UNPROVOKED ATTACKS ON IRAN

Israel’s devasting attacks on Iran – which have killed top military, nuclear scientists and many civilians – and Iran’s retaliatory bombing of Israel – threatens to extend the war on Gaza to the whole region. And now Trump may be poised to join Israel’s war with Iran considering even assassinating Iran’s leader.

The IAWM believes that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors’ censuring of Iran for non-compliance with its obligations under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) became the pretext for Israel to bomb Iran.

We strongly condemn that Trump and other leaders of the Western world have rushed to take Israel’s side.

We further believe that the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme – which Iran claims is for civilian purposes and whose development for many years has been unknown – is a ruse to divert attention away from Gaza.

In the last week Israeli troops killed over one hundred Palestinians and wounded hundreds more as they sought aid in Gaza. The drone and gun attacks on desperate crowds of aid seekers in Khan Younis was the latest in  a sustained wave of carnage since the US-backed  Gaza Humanitarian Foundation launched operations to distribute food in the territory three weeks ago.

Only last week Irish citizens participated in an international rally to Rafah to give further voice to the international popular outcry at Israel’s genocide.  And recently European allies of Israel were expressing guarded criticism of its unrelenting killing and starving of Palestinians.

In recent days the European leaders have rallied back to Israel. They bizarrely claim that Israel’s pre-emptive strikes were somehow acts of self-defence. Ursula von der Layen has turned the focus on Iran’s nuclear programme as the greatest threat to peace. And yet 22 months of genocide in Gaza, with at least 55,000 deaths including many children points to the real war perpetrator.

We call on the Irish government not to join in the anti-Iran chorus coming from the EU. We call for an immediate stop to any further escalation of attacks on Iran.  We repeat our call for all trade to Israel to stop to bring an end to the genocide in Gaza and now to stop Israel’s extension of its murderous campaign to Iran.
