ANTI WAR RELATED FILMS AT DUBLIN FILM FESTIVAL

JDIFF 2012 has three films strongly concerned with the brutalisation of the human spirit that occurs in war time, from the oppression of Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi to the pain endured by the Lebanese mothers and wives of those dying for a cause in Where Do We Go Now. Though different, each one is uniquely powerful, and the different approaches to the ravages of war give an incredibly broad view.
Apples of the Golan – Saturday 18th February, 4.15pm, Cineworld 9 Jill Beardsworth and Keith Walsh will attend the screening for a Q&A Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria in the closing stages of the 1967 Six Day War. Prior to the occupation there were 139 villages in the Golan. Today, only five remain and one of these – Majdal Shams – is the backdrop to this fascinating documentary in which a myriad of characters, from shepherds to rap singers, speak. Apples, brought to the region by a holy man in 1945, are both the lifeblood of the Druze Arabs and a metaphor for survival. As one person puts it, “we are like birds in a cage: you give the birds food and water, but the birds cannot escape.” Steadily showing the story and letting it do its own telling, Jill Beardsworth and Keith Walsh have a wonderful, thought provoking documentary.

This is not a Film – Sunday 19th February,6pm Light House 3
Arrested on political charges, sentenced to six years in jail and a twenty-year ban on directing, the Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi – under house arrest in his Tehran apartment while awaiting the outcome of his appeal – speaks to a video camera. He eats breakfast to the sound of explosions and police sirens. He is, as a box on a shelf he shows to us says “Buried.” An incredible and attention seizing film, This is not a Film shows not only the dangers of dissent, but the importance of film making as a form of protest

Where Do We Go Now? – Monday 20th February, Cineworld 17, 6.15pmThis wonderful Lebanese film depicts the struggles of a group of women, both Muslim and Christian. who band together to stop further sectarian violence in their war-ravaged village. Told as a modernisation of Aristophanes’ Lysistrata, it’s a wonderful retelling of a deeply sad and far to familiar story.
