NOTICE OF PRESS CONFERENCE

TO MARK THE SEVENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE US LED INVASION OF IRAQ.

FRIDAY MARCH 19TH AT 11AM, BUSWELLS HOTEL, MOLESWORTH ST, CENTRAL DUBLIN.

Speakers: Roger Cole (Chairperson, Peace & Neutrality Alliance), Richard Boyd Barrett (Chairperson, Irish Anti-War Movement), Joe Costello TD (Labour Party), Aengus O Snodaigh TD (Sinn Fein), Joe Higgins MEP (Socialist Party), Finian McGrath TD (Ind).

The Irish Anti-War Movement (IAWM) and the Peace & Neutrality Alliance (PANA) will hold a press conference on Friday March 19th at 11am in Buswell’s Hotel, Molesworth St, Dublin to mark the seventh anniversary of the US led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

The IAWM and PANA were the organisers of the 100,000 strong protest in Dublin on February 15th 2003 to oppose the then planned invasion of Iraq and many other subsequent demonstrations against the wars and occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The press conference will outline the continued opposition of the Irish peace movement to the on-going US-led conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan and to the Irish government’s continued support for the US war machine through the presence of Irish troops in Afghanistan and the facilitation of US military aircraft at Shannon airport. The press conference will look at the significance of US President, Barack Obama’s, decision to publicly thank Toaiseach Brian Cowen for assisting the US military effort in Afghanistan at Shannon, when they met in Washington on St Patrick’s day.

The press conference will importantly also give details of the recent disgraceful decision by the Obama administration to deny entry to the United States to former Irish Army officer and prominent peace activist, Edward Horgan. Horgan had been due to travel to the US to speak about Ireland’s role in rendition flights.

The press conference will call for:

– AN END TO THE BLOODY WARS AND OCCUPATIONS IN AFGHANISTAN & IRAQ.

-WITHDRAWAL OF IRISH TROOPS FROM AFGHANISTAN – US TROOPS & RENDITION FLIGHTS OUT OF SHANNON.

-PROTEST AGAINST RECENT DECISION OF THE US GOVERNMENT TO BAN FORMER IRISH ARMY OFFICER AND PEACE ACTIVIST, EDWARD HORGAN, FROM ENTERING US.
