What is Nakba?

Al Nakba (The Catastrophe) is what Palestinians call the events of 1947/48 when – on the back of a campaign of vicious ethnic cleansing in which over 700,000 Palestinians were expelled from their homeland never to return – the establishment of the State of Israel was achieved.

Every year, on 15th May Palestinians and their supporters around the world mark Nakba Day. In 2011, the Israeli parliament criminalised commemoration of Al Nakba within the state[1].
