Galway Alliance Against War 99 RED BALLOON PEACE EVENT 30TH MAY 2009 AT 12 NOON SPANISH ARCH, GALWAY

GAAW welcomes the Volvo Ocean Race stopover in Galway, but we deplore the invitation to the RAF’s Red Arrows. Neither the warplanes nor their pilots have any connection whatsoever with the unique character and culture of Galway or Ireland.  Their display is both a polluter of the environment and the international body politic. Tear away the ‘glamour’ that shrouds the planes and pilots and what you have is a recruiting sergeant for the British military and an apology for war, death and terror; what you have are pilots, who in their day jobs are trained to terrorise and kill people. Nearly every one of the pilots has seen combat in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Pilots and planes that kill other people’s children are not family entertainment.

As a peace group we have no option but to oppose this invitation to these killers.

Our opposition to these killers has been decried by certain FF gombeens. They have accused us of being “anti-Galway” – this is rich coming from a party that has brought not just Galway’s economy, but the economy of the entire republic to its knees.

Galway’s Labour TD Michael D. Higgins, however, has expressed his opposition to the Red Arrows’ war display over Galway Bay.

GAAW will be making its voice heard. We will hold a 99 Red Balloon Peace Event on Saturday 30th May at Noon at Spanish Arch. Please be there and spread the word!

GAAW would urge those wishing to take part in the Afri Famine Walk to attend our 99 Red Balloon Peace Event first before traveling onto the annual Famine Walk.
