The Irish Anti-War Movement

Galway public meeting ‘With Israeli attacks on Gaza, how can Palestine be free?’

PRESS RELEASE

On Monday 18th August a public meeting will be held on
‘With Israeli attacks on Gaza, how can Palestine be free?’
The meeting will commence at 8pm in Richardson’s upstairs meeting room, 1 Eyre Square, Galway.

Ciaran Tierney, well-known Galway journalist working for the Connacht Tribune, will address the meeting.
Ciaran will speak of his support for Gaza, what shaped his views, what role the media does & could play in the reporting of the situation for the Palestinian peoples.

It is quite rare that local journalists voice their personal political opinions in public. This may be because of structures in place that makes it extremely difficult for them to stick their hand up and say, “We support the Palestinians.” Many journalists though sympathetic to the suffering of the Palestinians feel they have to prove that they are “balanced” for fear of being accused of bias in their professional role.

The meeting will also be addressed by Kieran Allen of the Socialist Worker’s Party & People Before Profit Alliance who is a lecturer in Sociology at UCD.
Kieran will follow on the political analysis of the Palestine/Israel question past & present and future peace. How can there be peace if there has to be a continual struggle by people against military rule, occupation, and the blockade of Gaza?

The meeting aims to provide a better understanding of the politics behind the ongoing situation. It will be open for questions & general discussion. Galway SWP are hosting this public meeting- all welcome, event is free.
