Dublin City Council’s recent motion to terminate the use of Shannon Airport by US troops is an encouraging political move in the right direction (see http://www.shannonwatch.org/story/dublin-city-council-opposes-use-shannon-airport-us-troops). However the FG/Labour government has still not made any move towards ensuring international law is upheld at Shannon. Troops still pass through on a daily basis. The Irish government and the Gardai still have a policy of NOT searching planes for illegal munitions, kidnapped prisoners of the CIA, or war criminals. And all the while, the civilian death toll increases and the humanitarian crisis continues in Afghanistan. Like in Iraq, US/NATO invasion and occupation has failed to achieve anything positive.
It is time to end Ireland and Shannon’s support for these wars.
