IAWM / PANA / SHANNONWATCH / GAAW PROTEST AT SHANNON AIRPORT ON SUNDAY 11 MARCH AT 2PM.

IRISH ANTI WAR MOVEMENT (IAWM) – PRESS RELEASE 10 MARCH 2012

– IAWM / PANA / SHANNONWATCH / GAAW PROTEST AT SHANNON AIRPORT ON SUNDAY 11 MARCH AT 2PM.
– IAWM CALLS FOR IRISH GOVERNMENT TO CLOSE DOWN FACILITY FOR US MILITARY AT SHANNON

In a statement released today the Irish Anti-war Movement noted that it is joining the regular monthly protest at the roundabout at Shannon Airport tomorrow, Sunday 11 March at 2pm.

Members of the IAWM will join with other peace activists from the Peace and Neutrality Alliance (PANA), Shannon Watch and the Galway Alliance Against War (GAAW) to protest against the continued use of Shannon Airport by the US Military and by flights involved in rendition. A statement from US Peace Mum and Anti-war Activist Cindy Sheehan, who is currently in Ireland, will be read out at the protest. Activists plan to wear orange boiler suits in solidarity with former and current prisoners in Guantanamo Bay some of whom may have stopped over at Shannon on rendition flights.

Protesters will travel to Shannon from Dublin on a bus organized by PANA and the IAWM.

Jim Roche, PRO of the IAWM said:

“We are approaching the 9th anniversary of the immoral and illegal attack and invasion of Iraq, a war that has left hundreds of thousands of Iraqis dead, millions displaced and the country in ruins – a war from which the US military has been forced to withdraw ignominiously.”

“The awful war and occupation in Afghanistan is now also officially regarded as a failure. US representatives are already reputedly holding peace talks with representatives from the Taliban in Qatar, while lethal Drone attacks are still killing civilians and six young British soldiers were killed this week. It is outrageous that this war is still going on. All foreign troops should be withdrawn from Afghanistan immediately.”

It is outrageous that this war is still going on. All foreign troops should be withdrawn from Afghanistan immediately.”

He continued:
“It is truly astounding that successive Irish Governments have facilitated these wars and occupations and have also allowed aero-planes involved in rendition to land at Shannon Airport. It is also wrong that the Irish Government is sycophantically following the US and British drumbeats of war yet again, supporting punitive sanctions on Iran and a possible future military attack on that country.”

US Peace Mum and anti-war activist, Cindy Sheehan, in a written message to the IAWM noted:

“It is regrettable that years after it has been proven without a doubt that the US War of Terror was based on lies for profit, that the Republic of Ireland is still allowing US troop transports and other war planes to land at Shannon Airport.”

The IAWM statement concluded by noting that, due to the Irish Government’s support for these illegal wars, it was essential that peace activists gather at Shannon Airport this Sunday, close to the 9th anniversary of the attack on Iraq, and voice their outrage and concern at this Irish governmental complicity in this wasteful carnage.
