IAWM PR – CHEMICAL ATTACK IN DOUMA, SYRIA

CHEMICAL ATTACK IN DOUMA, SYRIA
IRISH ANTI-WAR MOVEMENT (IAWM) PRESS RELEASE: 09 APRIL 2018
• CONDEMN CHEMICAL ATTACK IN DOUMA, SYRIA
• CONDEMN MILITARY RETALIATION BY ISRAEL
• CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE IN SYRIA CONFLICT
The IAWM today noted that the chemical attack on Douma in Syria was utterly horrific and barbaric and that the atrocity must be condemned unequivocally.
It is not possible to say with certainty at this time who or what group has carried out this attack but it is clear that some form of horrific chemical attack occurred and once again it is the civilians in Syria, including many children, who are horribly suffering.
This attack must not be used to justify further military attacks which will just intensify and prolong the conflict and the suffering of ordinary Syrians. The IAWM condemns all the attacks on civilians that have characterised this war whether they were carried out by the Assad Regime or many of the foreign intervention forces which include Russia, Iran, Turkey, Hezbollah, America, Israel et al. Britain and France have also been involved while Saudi Arabia and Qatar have armed many of the rebel groups.
The overnight attack on the Syrian airstrip near Homs, likely carried out by Israel, that reportedly killed 14 people, must also be condemned as it will just escalate the conflict further. We must ask who were the people killed in this attack? Why are we not seeing their faces on our TV screens?
While totally condemning the horrific chemical attack in Douma which killed killed many men, women and children the IAWM questions the speed with which western powers and their allies in the Middle East have rushed to conclusions and have used this as an opportunity to escalate the war.

Jim Roche, PRO of the IAWM noted:
“This endless cycle of killing must stop. There must be an immediate ceasefire in this conflict so that an independent enquiry can be held into such atrocities, that humanitarian aid can be delivered to those in need, that war refugees can be helped return home and that Syrian civil society can be assisted to start rebuilding the country.
It is highly selective and hypocritical of western powers to jump to conclusions as to who carried out this attack and then launch an overnight retaliatory airstrike that killed another 14 people. Israeli troops have openly killed 18 civilians in Gaza over the last two weekends yet there has been no sanction by western powers. The idea that Israel can rush to the rescue of civilians in Syria is truly sickening.
Syrians have suffered more than enough because of this proxy war between world and regional imperial powers. All foreign militaries should leave Syria. Further bombing by western countries with dubious imperial intentions is not the answer.”
