The Irish Anti-War Movement

IAWM SAYS EXPULSION OF SINGLE ISRAELI DIPLOMAT IS TOKENISTIC AND INADEQUATE

ALL DIPLOMATIC AND ECONOMIC TIES WITH ROUGUE APARTHIED STATE SHOULD BE CUT.

In a statement the Irish Anti-War Movement (IAWM) has said the government’s decision to expel a single Israeli diplomat over the forged Irish passports used in the Dubai assassination of a senior Hamas official was a "woefully inadequate and tokenistic" sanction against Israel, given its crimes.

The IAWM said the passport scandal was only  one instance among countless Israeli atrocities and crimes for which Ireland and other members of the International community should impose severe sanctions.

The IAWM said that Israel’s crimes in last years assault in Gaza, the recent killing of 9 peace activists, the on-going siege of Gaza and the systematic denial of human rights to the entire Palestinian population, should lead the Irish government to sever all diplomatic and economic ties with Israel.

The IAWM have held a number of protests outside the Israeli embassy since the Israeli attack on the Gaza peace flotilla last week, calling for the expulsion of the Israeli ambassador and full economic and diplomatic sanctions against Israel.

Richard Boyd Barrett, chairperson of the IAWM said:

"This is a woefully inadequate and tokenistic measure by Michael Martin, designed to make it look as if the government is doing something to penalise Israel when in fact, it is doing nothing.

This measure will do nothing to prevent Israel carrying on business as usual, in terms of continuing its brutal siege of Gaza and its criminal denial of basic human rights to the entire Palestinian population.

By any objective standard, Israel has committed numerous war crimes, is in permanent breach of international law and is a violent and apartheid regime that should be shunned by our government and the International community.

It simply defies belief that no sanctions have been imposed by our government following the murderous Israeli assault on Gaza last year and the on-going siege, and that we continue to treat Israel as normal state and trade with them.

Even the crimes of Aparthied South Africa, pale beside those of Israel against the Palestinians, and yet no serious sanctions are imposed, just a tiny rap on the knuckles – its shameful.

The Irish public must continue to protest and demand boycott and sanctions against Israel and not allow Israel to get away with the murders of peace activists and countless Palestinians."
