The IAWM express deep sorrow at the death of an Irish soldier following an attack on a peacekeeping convoy in Lebanon last night and we extend our sympathies to the peacekeeper’s family and friends. We are also concerned about the injured members of the convoy and we wish them a speedy recovery. This is horrific news for the families of these peacekeepers especially at this time of year and our thoughts are with them.
Jim Roche, PRO of the IAWM said:
“Irish peacekeepers serving in UNIFIL in southern Lebanon under a UN mandate have been playing an incredibly important role at a risk to their lives for many decades and their contribution to maintaining peace in this region is widely recognised. Their role within UNIFIL is an exemplar of how a neutral country can contribute to help solving regional conflict. We are deeply saddened to hear the news of this attack on an Irish convoy and of the death of one peacekeeper and the serious injuring of one more. We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the killed Irish peacekeeper and wish all the injured Irish soldiers a speedy recovery.”
