The Irish Anti-War Movement

IAWM STALL AT THE SPIRE / GPO IN DUBLIN TODAY, SAT. 19 MARCH FROM 12.30PM – STOP THE WARS ON UKRAINE & YEMEN

IRISH ANTI WAR MOVEMENT (IAWM) PRESS RELEASE 19 MARCH 2022
• IAWM STALL AT THE SPIRE / GPO IN DUBLIN TODAY FROM 12.30PM
• STOP PUTIN’S BARBARIC WAR ON UKRAINE
• NO TO ESCALATION BY PUTIN – NO TO ESCALATION BY NATO COUNTRIES
• STOP SAUDI ARABIA’S BARBARIC WAR ON YEMEN
• PROTEST AGAINST WAR IN YEMEN & UKRAINE ON SAT. 26TH MARCH
The Irish Anti War Movement (IAWM) will have a stall this Saturday at the GPO / Spire, O’ Connell Street in Dublin from 12.30pm calling for an end to Putin’s war on Ukraine and an end to the US supported Saudi war on Yemen. We call on all our supporters to join us at our stall today.
The IAWM continues to condemn Putin’s invasion of Ukraine just as we call for an end to the Saudi led war on Yemen. We call for exactly the same thing for the now 4-week war on Ukraine as we do for the 7-year old war on Yemen – an immediate ceasefire, withdrawal of foreign forces, diplomatic and peaceful negotiations and massive humanitarian aid to refugees and besieged civilians.
The Ukraine war is now in it’s fourth week and while peace talks are ongoing it shows no sign of letting up. We demand a ceasefire and diplomatic efforts to achieve a lasting solution that guarantees peace and security for all peoples and cultures. As President Zelenski has said: “It’s time to meet, its time to talk ….”
Sadly, most western political leaders show scant regard for diplomacy. They match Putin’s obstinacy with further warmongering, ratcheting up the stakes by funnelling all kinds of arms into Ukraine. They do not seek meaningful peace talks – rather a prolonged war of attrition where they will fight Putin to the last Ukrainian. Meanwhile they revel in the opportunities to escalate the militarisation of western society. Such policies, of prolonging the war, will be disastrous for the people of Ukraine and still present the very real risk of wider conflagration and the possibility of a nuclear accident, or worse still nuclear war.
Escalating and prolonging this war will be an absolute catastrophe for the people of Ukraine and beyond. Foreign Governments should be encouraging diplomatic efforts to stop the war. There is absolutely no evidence of this happening which is truly shocking.
The same western leaders display appalling double standards and hypocrisy in relation to Saudi Arabia’s and UAE’s war on Yemen which is fully supported by two large NATO members, the US and Britain. They provide the arms and the advisors that ultimately kill Yemeni men, women and children – a total of 377,000 so far according to the UN. Millions of Yemenis are starving and dying due to a US-backed Saudi blockade which is preventing vital humanitarian aid reaching those in desperate need. Western Governments support and arm the barbaric Saudi regime which executed 81 people last week, 41 of them activists seeking only freedom and democracy.
THERE MUST BE CEASEFIRES IN BOTH THESE WARS NOW FOLLOWED BY MEANINGFUL PEACE TALKS!
Marnie Holborow, Steering Committee Member of the IAWM said:
“NATO and the European Union (EU) are increasingly working side by side in a military response to Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. The Irish Government must speak out against this escalation of the war and of the militarisation of the EU. We believe that the war in Ukraine cannot become a pretext to draw Ireland into the militarisation of the EU. Peace and diplomacy are the only way to stop this war. Ireland, as a neutral state within Europe, is in an ideal position – at the UN Security Council, and within the institutions of the EU – to pursue the case for diplomacy and peace in both the war on Ukraine and the war on Yemen.”
