IAWM SUPPORT SHANNONWATCH VIGIL AT SHANNON AIRPORT TODAY

IAWM PRESS RELEASE – 13 OCTOBER 2013

• SHANNONWATCH VIGIL AT SHANNON AIRPORT TODAY 2-3PM
• BUS FROM DUBLIN TO SHANNON TO SUPPORT SHANNONWATCH VIGIL
• US MILITARY OUT OF AFGHANISTAN AND SHANNON
• CLOSE GUANTANAMO TORTURE CENTRE NOW

The Irish Anti-war Movement (IAWM) issued a statement today announcing its support for the Shannonwatch monthly vigil that is taking place today from 2pm to 3pm at the roundabout just in front of the entrance to the airport.

The statement noted that Shannonwatch is holding the peace vigil at Shannon to mark the 12th anniversary of the US occupation of Afghanistan. Over those twelve years Shannon Airport has been used to move troops over and back to Afghanistan. As a result, Ireland has played a part in the ongoing war and destruction that still prevails there, and consequently in the killing of thousands of innocent civilians.

Shannonwatch may be contacted at shannonwatch@gmail.com or phone 087 8225087.

The statement also noted that the IAWM is supporting the PANA (Peace and Neutrality Alliance) bus that is travelling from Dublin and some of its members are on board.

Jim Roche, PRO of the IAWM said:

“It is important to mark the 12th anniversary of the invasion of Afghanistan, an act that has brought nothing but disaster for the people of that country and indeed for many US families whose soldier members have either been killed or horrifically maimed. The war in Afghanistan has been characterised primarily by the slaughter of innocents many of them women and children whose names remain unknown to us and by the outsourcing of torture ultimately leading to the horrors of the Guantanamo Bay detention centre. It is completely unacceptable that successive Irish Governments, including the current coalition, have supported the US Military in prosecuting this horror. The recent video made by the Guardian shows the horror of Guantanamo where prisoners long since cleared for release are being tortured by force-feeding.”
