1. #M19 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST RACISM:

PUBLIC RALLY, SATURDAY, MARCH 19, 2PM CENTRAL BANK PLAZA, DUBLIN 2.

The IAWM is supporting this important anti-racist event in Dublin tomorrow.

At a time when racism is on the rise throughout the world, so recently targeted at refugees who are fleeing wars that have been instigated or prolonged by western powers, it is important that anti-war activists highlight the real reasons behind such racism and argue that a different world of peaceful co-existence is possible. The EU’s treatment of refugees trying to get to safety in Europe having fled repression and wars, and faced horrific perilous journeys across land and sea, is obscene and against the stated ethos of the UN Human Rights Convention and even the supposed ethos of the EU.

Memet Uludag, Steering Committee member IAWM said:

Today in Europe the fight against racism is vitally important. Racism divides us, creates fear and hate and is a key mechanism for diverting mass anger at austerity onto scapegoats.  The refugee crisis has given racist, Islamophobic and fascist movements an excuse to mobilise, build and spread their propaganda. But as the rally in Dublin against Pegida showed, anti-racism can win against such movements. We must continue our stand against racism and build stronger anti-racist movements.”

He also noted that:

“Meanwhile the NATO militarisation of the Aegean Sea to stop the refugees is fully underway. NATO, with the agreement of EU-Greece-Turkey is extending its operation area to include the territorial waters of Greece and Turkey. Britain is sending warships to join the NATO fleet under the command of Germany. 100,000 refugees are expected to be mass deported to Turkey. So we have a completely militaristic response to the largest humanitarian refugee crisis since WW2.”

Jim Roche, IAWM PRO said:

“The newly agreed protocol between the EU and Turkey to send refugees back to Turkey and the recent action of the French police and Government in Calais, are just two more shameful and racist inciting acts against vulnerable refugees. The Irish Government has done more than stand idly by; it has supported such measures while at the same time not meeting its agreed obligation to take in a small number of refugees. It is pathetic that it is only taking in less than 100 of the promised 4000 refugees of which 2500 were to be resettled before Xmas 2015.”

He continued:

“There is a simple way to address the refugees coming to Europe for safety – STOP THE WARS AND THE GLOBAL ARMS TRADE! And stand up to the racist, bigoted Islamophobes and Xenophobes in the small ultra-right groups. That is why the IAWM is supporting this United Against Racism (UAR) event on Saturday 19 March – the International Day of Action against Racism.”

Edward Horgan’s Mother’s Day message from Shannon Airport:

So its happy Mother’s Day isn’t it. Lets hope some of the thousands, and more likely tens of thousands, of mothers, will have a happy Mother’s Day, as they flee from the conflicts in the Middle East with their little children , as they huddle at the razor wire fences, in the snow and rain, on the borders with Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, and Slovakia, being refused refugee protection.

At Shannon Airport this morning it was cold, wet and windy, but I was dressed in warm clothing and was able to go the Park Inn hotel and warm up with tea and a scone after taking the photos below.

Description: http://www.shannonwatch.org/sites/shannonwatch.org/files/imagecache/add_image_medium/Pic%206.jpgThere were three US warplanes at Shannon airport this morning. One was a large C17 US Air Force, Air Mobility Command, Charleston Air Force base, and its registration number was 77180. It was on its way to Abu Dhabi in the Persian Gulf, and most likely delivering armed US troops and munitions into one or more of the war zones, in Afghanistan, Yemen, Iraq or Syria. This aircraft is quite capable of transport several deadly Drones that are killing dozens of people each week in the Middle East.
