IAWM WELCOMES PROPOSED LAUNCH OF ACADEMICS FOR PALESTINE

The Irish Anti-War Movement issued a statement today welcoming the proposed launch of Academics for Palestine this Thursday.

A LEADING Israeli academic and film-maker who has defied his country’s government by advocating a boycott against it will be in Ireland this week to support a new campaign group.

Professor Haim Bresheeth will be joined by renowned Palestinian doctor and scholar Ghada Karmi at the launch of Academics for Palestine.
The new group has organised more than 120 Irish academic signatories on a pledge to boycott Israeli institutions until Palestinian rights are respected. It is is part of an international campaign initiated by Palestinian civil-society organisations.

Professor Bresheeth and Dr Karmi will be joined at the launch by Dr Conor McCarthy, lecturer in English at NUIM Maynooth, and Dr Andy Storey, lecturer in politics and international relations at UCD.

On Thursday, Academics for Palestine will also release its list of signatories, publish an informative 28-page booklet on the academic boycott and reveal the close, EU-funded connections between some Irish researchers and the Israeli military/security apparatus.

Professor Bresheeth and Dr Karmi will be attending a lunchtime event, chaired by Dr Ronit Lentin, in Trinity College Dublin on Thursday. They will otherwise be available for interview in Dublin from 8pm Wednesday to 5.30pm Thursday.

Biographical notes on main speakers:
Dr Ghada Karmi is a leading Palestinian academic, doctor of medicine, and writer who was born in Jerusalem. She is a research fellow at the institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter, England. Her work has focused on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict which she has taught and researched for many years. She has been active in the boycott movement against Israel and is a member of BRICUP, the British-based academic boycott organisation. Her recent books include a widely acclaimed memoir, In Search of Fatima, and Married to Another Man: Israel’s Dilemma in Palestine.

Professor Haim Bresheeth, an Israeli citizen, was born to Polish Jewish holocaust survivors in an Italian refugee camp. A filmmaker, photographer and film studies scholar, he was Dean of the School of Media, Film and Cultural Studies, at Sapir College, Israel and, from 2001, Professor of Film, Cultural and Media Studies at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences,University of East London. He now teaches at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. His books include Introduction to the Holocaust (with Stuart Hood) and a co-edited volume with Haifa Hammami,The Conflict and Contemporary Visual Culture in Palestine & Israel. His films include State of Danger (1989, BBC2) – a documentary on the first Palestinian Intifada – and more recently London is Burning, on the August 2011 London riots.
