 IRAQ – 11 YEARS ON

Silent Protest on Shop Street, Galway

At the top of Shop Street, Galway this Wednesday 19th March at 12.45pm the Galway Alliance Against War will mark the 11th anniversary of the illegal Iraq War and the 9th week of Margaretta D’Arcy’s imprisonment with a 45 minute silent protest.

Ireland played a significant role (via Shannon airport and Irish airspace) in the unnecessary Iraq war. The people of Iraq to this day continue to suffer its legacy. In seven months of 2013 some twenty thousand people lost their lives as a result of the civil and sectarian divisions that were fomented because of the US and British invasion in 2003.

All told it is estimated that 1.4 million people have lost their lives in the past 11 years in Iraq. There are four million refugees. Mass poverty and chronic illness plague the country. Cancers and birth deformities caused by war and the weapons of war are commonplace. One of the principal culprits being depleted uranium weaponry, which were transported via Shannon airport.

It was for all these reasons that Margaretta D’Arcy and Niall Farrell went on the runway at Shannon airport and it was for all these reasons that Margaretta went to jail 9 weeks ago to prevent her from continuing to highlight this criminality.

Margaretta D’Arcy will be released from Mountjoy Gaol next Saturday, 22nd March, at 10.30am.
