IRISH MAINSTREAM MEDIA’S DISTORTED COVERAGE OF EVENTS IN GAZA AND JERUSALEM
A short letter sent to all three Irish broadsheets yesterday. Unpublished of course.
Why is the Irish media clearly distorting the reality in its reportage of the carnage unfolding in Gaza?
Why does it not respect the democratic wishes of the people of Palestine (not just in Gaza) from the 2006 election?
Why do Irish journalists and editors not investigate the complicity of US and EU Governments, in supporting Israel, through massive arms sales?
Dear Editor,
is there any hope that for once we could hear a US President or an Irish Foreign Affairs Minister acknowledge that Palestinians have a right to defend themselves, a right we know exists for the Israeli state because we hear it all the time? An occupied peoples’ right to resist is enshrined in international jurisprudence. Is there any chance we could also for once hear our national broadcaster and other media outlets not refer to Hamas members as militants, but instead perhaps as the duly elected Government of Palestine? Remember that election of 2006 which former US President Jimmy Carter described as one of the fairest he had ever witnessed? Is there any hope that when commentators are referring to Israel they will call it as it is – a racist apartheid State that perpetuates a permanent violence on the Palestinian people whose lands they occupy or besiege?
Yours etc.
