Lisbon Treaty : Support from Germany, from Attac in Aachen

To:  Campaign Against the European Union’s Constitution
Re: Support from Germany, from Attac in Aachen
Dear Irish Co-Europeans of CAEUC,

As you presumably know, the network of ATTAC is fighting against any unrestricted profiteering at the expense of peoples and world peace. Therefore, we are also against the neo-liberal EU “Constitution“ to be implemented with the Treaty of Lisbon. We thank you and the Irish people that you so far prevented with your NO the Constitution to come into force. You may be assured of our full support to achieve another NO when the voting will be repeated! Unfortunately, German people were not allowed to vote in a referendum. We of Attac Aachen are sure that the majority would also have voted NO.

We of Attac Aachen are sure that the majority would also have voted NO.

Perhaps you also know the "International Charlemagne Prize of Aachen", to be awarded annually since 1950 for European unification. We also wish the peoples of Europe to be united, but not by force, as it was pursued by the Emperor Charlemagne, the patron of the Prize. Yet, during the last years, the selection of the laureates perfectly followed his imperial concept, i.e. by selecting warlords such as Tony Blair (1999), Bill Clinton (2000), and Javier Solana Madariaga (2007). Attac Aachen always protested against it.
The official self-portrayal of the Charlemagne Prize (in English) is also available on the Internet:
The epitome of impudence was, however, when the Charlemagne Prize was awarded to Chancellor Angela Merkel in the year 2008. Ironically, she was honoured with the Prize exactly for the contributions she made to realise the "Treaty of Lisbon”, which isn’t but a new envelope for the EU Constitution which has already been rejected in referendums by the Netherlands and by France.

Attac Aachen anticipated the announcement of the Charlemagne Prize laureate of the year 2009. We devised an action to be staged in the public with a high visibility effect:
Members of Attac Aachen disguised themselves as a Charlemagne Prize Committee, rode in a large limousine escorted by 8 motorcycles to the place where the proclamation was to be made, where our selection was then announced in the presence of an astonished audience on November 15, 2008: The Charlemagne Prize of 2009 will be awarded to the Irish people. By rejecting the Treaty of Lisbon in a referendum, the Irish people did their utmost in the service of the future welfare and peace of Europe. Our reasons for doing so were the same you have been advocating with your campaign.

Below you will find 3 photographs showing the action we staged.
