PRESS RELEASE 15 MAY 2012 – SOLIDARITY PROTEST WITH PALESTINIAN HUNGER STRIKERS & REMEMBER THE NAQBA

IRISH ANTI WAR MOVEMENT (IAWM) – PRESS RELEASE 15 MAY 2012
SOLIDARITY PROTEST WITH PALESTINIAN HUNGER STRIKERS AT THE SPIRE, DUBLIN, 5PM TODAY.
COMMEMORATE LAND DAY, REMEMBER THE NAQBA.
In a statement released today the Irish Anti-war Movement (IAWM) announced it would join the solidarity protest at 5pm today at the Spire on O Connell Street.
The statement noted that the hunger strike protest by up to 2000 Palestinian prisoners has been the most significant protest by Palestinians in a long time and had galvanized widespread support throughout the occupied Palestinian territories and beyond.
The statement also noted that the reported agreement reached yesterday between the Palestinian prisoners and the Israeli occupying forces totally vindicates the prisoners and grants all the demands they were seeking.
Jim Roche, PRO of the IAWM said:
“This peaceful hunger strike protest was hugely significant and clearly rattled the Israeli authorities who just did not know how to respond. Many of the prisoners are in prison on so-called ‘administrative detention’, which can be renewed after six months. This is a system so redolent of the horrific laws under apartheid South Africa. But then we should not be surprised, as Israel is after all an apartheid state.”
He continued by noting that:
“The agreement reached yesterday by the Palestinian prisoners represents a huge climb-down for the Israeli authorities and is essentially a victory for the hunger strikers. It will be interesting to see if Israel holds to its commitments. We should remember also that most of the prisoners are in prison for one reason – that they are Palestinian and that they dare to object to Israel’s occupation of their lands. It is important that solidarity activists in countries such as Ireland express solidarity with these prisoners.”
