British Royal Air Force Cargo Containers being transported through Shannon Airport

8th September 2009

For over seven years the Irish Government has allowed (and indeed invited) the US military, navy and air force to transit through Shannon airport, thereby ending Irish neutrality. About one and a half million armed US troops and unknown quantities of war materials including very dangerous munitions have passed through Shannon in gross breach of international laws on neutrality.

On Saturday 5 September 09 two warplanes were photographed by peace activists at Shannon. One was a US Hercules C130 cargo plane possibly carrying munitions, and the other was an OMNI Air chartered aircraft carrying about 200 armed US troops through Shannon. The uniformed US troops were also seen disembarking while their plane was being refuelled.

A possibly new breach of Irish neutrality was also observed and photographed at the airport. This was the presence of two large British Royal Air Force cargo containers clearly labelled as being from RAF Brize Norton airbase in the England. They appeared to be about to be loaded on to the cargo hold of the OMNI air US troop-carrier.

These activities at Shannon expose the falsehoods being portrayed by the Government in maintaining that Ireland is still a neutral state, and that the Government has been given legally binding guarantees on Irish neutrality by the European Union. It is not possible, legally or otherwise, to guarantee something that no longer exists. Irish neutrality has ceased to exist since 20 March 2003, in spite of the Government’s fraudulent claims to the contrary.
