1. PROTEST AT DÁIL THIS WEDNESDAY, 22 JANUARY, 1.00 – 1.45PM
FREE MARGARETTA D’ARCY – END USE OF SHANNON AS A WARPORT.
The IAWM issued a statement calling on its members and supporters to join the protest / vigil at Dáil Eireann today, 22 January from 1.00 – 1.45pm.
The statement noted:
The IAWM condemns the imprisonment of Margaretta D’Arcy, a 79-year-old writer and activist who is suffering from Parkinson’s disease and cancer, for her brave stance against the continued use of Shannon Airport by the US military in its pursuit of futile wars abroad.
Jim Roche, PRO of the IAWM said:
“We support Margaretta D’Arcy’s stance against wars waged by the US military and the brave action she took at Shannon airport in trying to draw attention to the use of an Irish national airport in the pursuit of such wars which have brought much suffering to millions of people in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Palestine. It is truly shocking that the Irish Government can jail a 79-year old woman who is suffering from Parkinson’s and cancer yet has persistently refused to search US war planes at Shannon, one of which recently was found to be heavily armed, and has failed miserably to jail anyone related to the activities in the banking sector that has brought the country such ruin. We know, from various polls, that a majority of the Irish public object to the use of Shannon Airport as a military hub and we are sure that most will also be outraged at the jailing of a peaceful 79-year-old frail woman. We urge them to attend the various protests around the country and to join us in calling for an end to the use of Shannon airport as a US military hub and for the immediate release of Margareta D’Arcy.”
