The Irish Anti-war Movement together with the Egyptian community in Ireland, has organised a protest today, Saturday 05 February at 12.00 noon at the GPO, Central Dublin, in solidarity with continued protests in Egypt.
In a statement today the Irish Anti-War Movement, joining with the Egyptian community in Ireland, called on its members to support the mass uprising in Egypt which calls for the resignation of Dictator/President Hosni Mubarak.
Yesterday evening up to 400 people marched from the GPO to the Egyptian Embassy in Dublin in support of the continued Egyptian protests. Many members of the Egyptian Community in Ireland who attended the protest in Dublin have been tortured in the past by the hated military police of the Mubarak regime. They described their horrific experience in detail to other protesters leaving no doubt as to why they want an end to this barbaric regime.

In Egypt yesterday, on the eleventh day of protests, hundreds of thousands of ordinary Egyptians occupied the streets again in peaceful defiance of the curfew and calling for an end to the Mubarak regime. Despite the organised intimidation by paid Mubarak supporters, that included orchestrated riots, snatching of protesters, and driving vehicles over peaceful protesters, the mass of Egyptian people clearly returned yesterday to demonstrate in several cities throughout Egypt for an end to the dictatorship of Hosni Mubarek.
Hundreds of protesters have been killed and thousands have been injured since the uprising began on 25 January. The regime is refusing to budge and is effectively allowing the country to fall into chaos rather than heed the call for democracy. The situation is very dangerous, particularly if food and fuel supplies begin to run out.
Meanwhile western leaders prevaricate publicly while simultaneously working behind the scenes for what they now term “an orderly transition” that will maintain their interests at the expense of the ordinary Egyptian people.
Richard Boyd Barrett, Chair of the IAWM, said
“Governments around the world must be placed under pressure by their own people to cut their ties with the Mubarak regime. The protest this afternoon will show the Irish government that we want them to sever ties with this dictatorial regime and do all they can to support the success of the pro-democracy revolution. The silence from the Irish political parties on the situation in Egypt is deafening.”
“Our protest will also show those courageous revolutionaries in Egypt that they have our support and that they do not stand alone.”
