The Irish Anti-War Movement

PROTEST THE JAILING OF MARGARETTA D’ARCY AT THE DEPT. OF JUSTICE, 94 ST. STEPHEN’S GREEN, DUBLIN 2 TODAY, 17 JAN. 1.00-1.45pm

IAWM PRESS RELEASE – 17 JANUARY 2014

• PROTEST THE JAILING OF MARGARETTA D’ARCY AT THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE, 94 ST. STEPHEN’S GREEN, DUBLIN 2, TODAY FRIDAY, 17 JANUARY 2014, 1.00 – 1.45PM.

The Irish Anti-war Movement (IAWM) issued a statement today condemning the imprisonment of Irish writer and activist Margaretta D’Arcy for her protest against the use of Shannon Airport by the US Military and rendition flights and called for its supporters to attend the non-party protest today at the Department of Justice, 94 St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin 2.

The statement noted:

The IAWM condemns the imprisonment of Margaretta D’Arcy, a 79-year-old writer and activist who is suffering from Parkinson’s disease and cancer, for her brave stance against the continued use of Shannon Airport by the US military in its pursuit of futile wars abroad.

Jim Roche, PRO of the IAWM said:

“We support Margaretta D’Arcy’s stance against wars waged by the US military and the brave action she took at Shannon airport in trying to draw attention to the use of an Irish national airport in the pursuit of such wars which have brought much suffering to millions of people in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Palestine. It is amazing that the Irish Government can jail a 79-year old woman who is suffering from Parkinson’s and cancer yet has persistently refused to search US war planes at Shannon, one of which recently was found to be heavily armed, and has failed miserably to jail anyone related to the activities in the banking sector that has brought the country such ruin.”
