The Irish Anti-War Movement

PROTEST TODAY AT 12–1.30 PM AT DÁIL EIREANN FOR BAHRAINI TEACHERS AND ACADEMIC STAFF

IRISH ANTI WAR MOVEMENT – PRESS RELEASE 22 JUNE 2012

• BAHRAINI CITIZENS TO ATTEND PROTEST TODAY AT 12–1.30 PM AT DÁIL EIREANN
• BAHRAINI TEACHERS AND ACADEMIC STAFF TO BE SENTENCED ON 25 JUNE
• IAWM SAYS FREEDOM AND JUSTICE FOR THE BAHRAINI PEOPLE

In a statement issued this morning the Irish Anti-war Movement (IAWM) called on its members and the general public to join in the protest organised by Witness Bahrain Ireland for today Friday 22 June at 12.00-1.30pm at Dáil Eireann, to highlight the plight of Bahraini teachers and Academic Staff who have been persecuted by the Bahraini regime for doing their jobs.

The statement noted that following pro-democracy protests in February and March of 2011, teachers and academic staff in Bahrain, were arrested, tortured and sentenced by a military court for attending pro democracy rallies. Following the military court verdict, sentencing some of them to up to 10 years in prison, they were retried in ‘Special Civilian Courts’ on multiple, fabricated charges. Mahdi Abu Deeb of the Bahrain Teachers Association now awaits his verdict, which is expected next Monday 25 June.

The protest today will highlight the plight of teachers and academic staff in Bahrain and call for the release of Mahdi Abu Deeb.

Jim Roche, PRO of the IAWM said:

“Following on from the successful protest on behalf of Irish trained Bahraini medics last week the protest today will focus on the plight of Bahraini teachers and academic staff who have suffered horrific suppression from the unelected Al-Khalifa regime. Today’s protest will send a message of hope and support to these teachers and academic staff and to all the people of Bahrain.”

“It will also highlight the silence of western powers in the face of this suppression. The US and Britain is siding with the regime in its oppression of its citizens through its silent complicity over its ally’s crimes and through escalation of arms sales. The IAWM is calling on western powers to stop dealing with the despotic regimes of Bahrain and Saudi Arabia and to support the ordinary peoples struggle for their basic human rights.”
