The latest violence in occupied Jerusalem is a product of Israel’s decades long continued policy of ethnic cleansing and harassment of indigenous Palestinians.
Israel is threatening to ethnically cleanse Palestinian families from their homes in Sheikh Jarrah, oc-cupied Jerusalem. Backed by the state and its discriminatory laws, settler groups have claimed ownership of the land in Sheikh Jarrah and implemented a creeping takeover of Palestinian homes, aided and abetted by Israeli courts and the security forces. The plans to forcibly dispossess the families is part and parcel of Israel’s ongoing policy of altering the demographic balance of the city, by ethnically cleansing Palestinians, while simultaneously providing financial and political support for illegal Jewish-only settlements built on stolen Palestinian land.
It is quite understandable and morally justified that Palestinians have protested against this threat as any group so threatened anywhere in the world would do. The Israeli State has responded with fa-miliar brutality attacking both protesters on the streets and worshippers in Islam’s third most sacred shrine, the Al-Aqsa Mosque, injuring hundreds.
World leaders as usual have uttered muted, meaningless responses. Imagine a Christian cathedral in Europe being attacked by military forces in such a discriminatory fashion as was witnessed at Al-Aqsa Mosque yesterday morning. What would the response of world leaders be then?

The indiscriminate actions of the Israeli armed forces against unarmed innocent civilians in Jerusa-lem has since led to rocket attacks being fired from Gaza and a subsequent utterly disproportionate response from Israel that has led to the killing of at least 24 civilians including 9 children.
In the face of Israel’s brutal crimes, democratic Governments of the world must act now to prevent it acting with impunity. The Irish Government must stop making meaningless statements and instead begin to treat Israel as the Apartheid state that it so clearly is.
Meaningful sanctions must be imposed by the Irish Government on the apartheid Israeli regime now.
