The Irish Anti-War Movement

STOP BOMBING SYRIA – IAWM PEACE MARCH 19TH NOVEMBER FROM RUSSIAN EMBASSY TO US EMBASSY

IAWM PRESS RELEASE 18 NOVEMBER 2016
STOP BOMBING SYRIA – PEACE MARCH 19TH NOVEMBER FROM RUSSIAN EMBASSY TO US EMBASSY
The Irish Anti-War Movement is holding a Peace March for Syria between the Russian and U.S. Embassies this Saturday 19 November in order to highlight the intense suffering of the Syrian people and the willful perpetuation of the war by Russia and the U.S. and other western powers.
The event will begin with a rally at the Russian Embassy, 184-186 Orwell Rd, Dublin 14 at 2.00pm followed by the peace march to the US Embassy on Elgin Road arriving approximately at 3.30pm.
Speakers so far include former MEP Patricia Mc Kenna, Richard Boyd Barrett TD (President IAWM), Shannon Peace Activist Ed Horgan and a Syrian refugee. There will also be speakers from Turkey and the US.
The IAWM note that Syria has become a living hell as Russia, the U.S. and other world and regional powers continue to bomb it in an attempt to compete for dominance while shamelessly killing civilians and flooding the region with arms. The IAWM says this must stop now and is calling on all peace and anti-war activists to join it in this Peace March this Saturday to highlight the role of both Russia and the US as the two key players in the military conflagration which has devastated Syria.
The IAWM is calling for a permanent cessation to the bombing in Syria.
Syria’s civil war has created the worst humanitarian crisis of our time. Since 2011, when the war began, half the country’s pre-war population — more than 11 million people — have been killed, wounded or forced to flee their homes. Syria has become a living hell with:
• Almost 500,000 dead
• 4,800,000 have fled as refugees
• 6,100,000 are internally displaced
• 13,500,000 are in desperate need of humanitarian aid.
The war is now heading into a sixth year and could lead to a worldwide conflagration.
The IAWM says: JOIN US IN OUR EFFORTS TO STOP THIS WAR NOW!

The war is now heading into a sixth year and could lead to a worldwide conflagration.
The IAWM says: JOIN US IN OUR EFFORTS TO STOP THIS WAR NOW!
• We call for all parties to the war including the Syrian government, the rebel groups, Russia, the US and their regional proxy powers, to agree to an immediate and permanent ceasefire.
• We demand a halt to the bombing and the opening of safe channels for humanitarian aid.
• We demand an end to all foreign intervention in Syria.
• We demand prosecution of those arms dealers who are flooding the country with weapons.
• We call on the Irish government to end its silence on the issue and to call in the US and Russian Ambassadors to demand they cease their militaries involvement in Syria.
• We demand that the international community work together for a diplomatic solution, as war is no solution at all.
• We demand that refugees fleeing the carnage receive sanctuary as needed in Europe and other countries.
“It is clear that however this military conflict began, it has long since become a proxy war between the US, Russia and several regional powers, such as Saudia Arabia, Qatar, Iran, Turkey etc. with the Syrian people caught in the middle in a violent geo-political sandwich”, said Jim Roche, PRO of the IAWM.” “Syria has become this massive violent playground for foreign powers to exercise their latest military hardware all of which is of course perpetuated by a despicable military industrial complex supported by western, Russian and other governments which has flooded the entire middle east region with the most lethal weaponry making it the most militarized region on the planet”, he said. He further noted: “There is no military solution to this conflict, there is only a political and diplomatic one. That is why we are holding this Peace March this Saturday; to draw attention to the fact that the continued war is fueled by the US, Russia and other foreign powers and that the Irish Government needs to end it silence on this issue.”
