In a statement today, the Irish Anti War Movement (IAWM) confirmed that it is holding a rally with Yemini, Saudi, American and Irish speakers at the Saudi Arabian Embassy, 6-7 Fitzwilliam Square East in Dublin this Thursday evening, 24 June at 6pm, calling for an end to the war on Yemen and for a lifting of the cruel siege.
The war in Yemen has raged for over six years and, according to the UN, has claimed 233,000 lives, forced the closure of 50% of health-care facilities and displaced more than 3.6 million people, over 80% of which are women and children. The main protagonist in this war is Saudi Arabia (together with the UAE) waging a proxy war against Iran who back the so-called Houthi Rebels. But the Saudis are backed by the US and the EU to protect their oil interests.
Abdulaziz Alloayyad, a Saudi Arabian citizen and member of the IAWM Steering Committee, said:
“I am appalled at the actions of the Saudi Government and military in prosecuting this war in Yemen.“
In addition to the fatalities and injured the Yemeni population is now in danger of a massive famine. 400,000 Yemeni children are at risk of dying according to the director of the UN World Food Programme. 11 million children need aid in the world’s worst humanitarian disaster. Yet much humanitarian aid is stranded in ships near the port of Hodeidah but not allowed to dock because of a US supported Saudi siege. Hundreds of lorries laden with aid are stuck on the road to the supply gateway of Hodeidah port, unable to progress due to lack of fuel, which is on the ships waiting to dock.
This is a horrifying situation in a country on the verge of a catastrophic famine where 90% of its food is imported. The Coronavirus pandemic runs rampant among such dysfunctionality.
THIS CATASTROPHE IS MAN MADE – THE WAR MUST STOP AND THE SIEGE MUST BE LIFTED NOW!
The Irish Government must show its support for the Yemini people by doing everything it can at the UN Security Council to pass a resolution to this effect. It should also stop its complicity in US-backed foreign wars by ending the facility to the US Military at Shannon Airport.
