THIS IS PART OF AN AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL CAMPAIGN ACROSS IRELAND, AND IS SUPPORTED BY GALWAY ALLIANCE AGAINST WAR, & SOCIALIST WORKERS PARTY.

On Monday 14 July Galway City Council will discuss a motion to declare
Galway Airport ‘Torture Free’. We need people to show their support by
attending the meeting which starts at 4pm, at Galway City Council Hall, College
Road, Galway.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO GATHER A CROWD IF POSSIBLE FOR 3.45pm.

Last year Derry City Council became the first local authority on the island
of Ireland to declare its local airport ‘torture free’ and we hope that by
supporting this motion the elected representatives of the people of Galway
City will show similar leadership for local authorities across the state to
do likewise.

While substantial concrete evidence exists to confirm that Shannon Airport
is used by CIA operated jets as part of the US government’s renditions
programme no such evidence exists with regard to Galway Airport.

There is immense symbolic value in local authorities taking a stand against Irish complicity in the kidnapping, secret detention and torture of people as part of the so-called ‘war on terror’.

Please add your voice to thousands across Ireland, including elected representatives
from every party in the Dáil, to call for the closure of Guantánamo Bay
detention facility and an end to renditions by supporting the motion from
Cllr Colette Connolly on Monday 14 July.
