TWO PRESIDENTS, DIFFERENT EXPECTATIONS

UNPUBLISHED LETTER SENT TO THE IRISH TIMES

Sir,

In reference to President Higgins’ recent Holocaust memorial speech, Paul Kearns (https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/2025/01/29/many-irish-friends-agree-with-michael-d-higgins-but-here-in-israel-there-is-anger-and-revulsion/, Wed Jan 29) says “Those who use an occasion like the Holocaust memorial event to make political points might do well to remember that the Holocaust continues to intimately touch not just our family, but the lives of millions of Israelis”. He had described the experiences of his eight-year-old daughter’s great-grandparents at the hands of the Nazis.

Presumably, his condemnation of the politicisation of the Holocaust extends to the frequent references to Hamas, the ICC, the ICJ and the “moral bankruptcy of the UN” itself  by Israeli President Herzog at the UN Holocaust memorial event, on the grounds that Herzog would do well to remember that whatever it is the Israelis are doing to the Gazans continues to intimately touch the lives of tens of thousands of Palestinian eight-year-olds, many of whom are dead, orphaned, suffer life-changing injuries, trauma etc..

Yours etc.
