The Irish Anti-War Movement

UKRAINE: NO TO ESCALATION BY PUTIN – NO TO ESCALATION BY NATO COUNTRIES

IRISH ANTI WAR MOVEMENT (IAWM) PRESS RELEASE 12 MARCH 2022
• IAWM STALL AT THE SPIRE DUBLIN TODAY FROM 1PM
• STOP PUTIN’S WAR NOW – SUPPORT RUSSIAN ANTI-WAR PROTESTERS
• NO TO ESCALATION BY PUTIN – NO TO ESCALATION BY NATO COUNTRIES
The Irish Anti War Movement (IAWM) will have a stall this Saturday at the Spire, O Connell Street in Dublin from 1pm calling for an end to Putin’s war on Ukraine.
The IAWM continues to condemn Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and we call on the Russian Federation to withdraw its military immediately.
On the 17th day of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine the war is entering a new phase as Russian tanks and artillery begin to surround Kyiv, Putin’s military attacks cities in west Ukraine and he invites Syrian mercenaries to join his fight against Ukrainians. The latter is particularly worrying given their brutal record in their own country. It could also reflect the fact that the Russian military has lost so many soldiers so far, including some of high command.
The war has all the hallmarks now of descending into a prolonged war of attrition with increased indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas, imminent sieges of cities, street to street fighting, complete destruction of buildings, horrendous conditions for refugees and the ever-present threat of a nuclear accident or conflagration.
We condemn this brutal escalation by Putin, we acknowledge the right of Ukrainians to defend their country and we call for a ceasefire and for meaningful peace talks.
The provision of further weaponry and volunteer fighters by western countries is not the answer. It also represents a further escalation of the war. It is clear from the declarations by western leaders after the Versailles Conference yesterday that they are set on using Putin’s brutal invasion of Ukraine as an excuse to both prolong the war and hence the suffering of Ukrainians and to increase militarisation generally.
THERE MUST BE A CEASEFIRE NOW!
STOP THE MAD RUSH TO A WAR OF ATTRITION!
Escalating and prolonging this war will be an absolute catastrophe for the people of Ukraine and beyond. Foreign Governments instead should be encouraging diplomatic efforts to stop the war. There is absolutely no evidence of this happening which is truly shocking.
Jim Roche, PRO of the IAWM said:
“We condemn this escalation by Putin as we also condemn the escalation by western powers. The war on Ukraine is looking more and more like a proxy war between Putin’s Russia and the west, particularly the US. On our anti-war stall today, we will be calling clearly for an end to this war, for a meaningful ceasefire and for serious peace negotiations to address the ongoing disagreements between Ukraine and Russia. We will also be pointing out the double standards of western leaders in relation to other ongoing wars particularly that in Yemen.”
