1. CRH and the Israeli Apartheid Wall Roadshow / Solidarity with Palestinian prisoners

Sat, 5 May 2012, 11:00 Grafton Street (St. Stephen’s Green End), Dublin 2

Dublin will witness an evocative piece of street theatre when the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) will stage “Israeli Checkpoint Bethlehem”. It which will feature a scale model of Israel’s West Bank wall and actors portraying Israeli soldiers and Palestinians. The aim is to highlight the routine difficulties, restrictions on freedom of movement and humiliations faced by people in the occupied Palestinian territories as they attempt to go about their daily lives.

The piece aims to highlight the shameful role of Irish cement multinational CRH plc who is profiting from Israel’s occupation through the sale of cement used for the construction of the Separation Wall and the illegal settlements in the West Bank. We will also be drawing attention to the issue of Palestinian political prisoners, many of whom will have been arrested at checkpoints just like this one. There are currently over 4,600 Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails. Currently some 2,000 are on hunger strike, eight of whom are currently in serious condition, protesting against their ill treatment by the Israeli state.

CRH are currently under investigation by the OECD for alleged complicity with Israel’s violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law.

Members of the IPSC will be manning an information stall and collecting signatures for their petition calling on CRH to divest from its unethical investments in Israel, in advance of its presentation to the CRH Annual General Meeting at a protest on Wednesday 9th May in Dun Laoghaire. (see details for this event in item 2).

2. On the morning of Wednesday 9 May Irish multinational CRH will hold their Annual General Meeting in the Royal Marine Hotel, Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire, Co. Dublin. The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign plan a highly visual photo-friendly protest outside the venue, featuring a mock checkpoint with soldiers, scale model wall, and a ‘human message’ spelling out “CRH: Stop Cementing Misery in Palestine”.

This is a call out to all solidarity activists to turn up on the morning and become part of a this important message along Marine Road.

Details:

What: The AGM is on the morning of Wednesday 9th May in Dun Laoghaire.

When and where to meet: 9.30am opposite the gates of the Royal Marine Hotel on Marine Road, Dun Laoghaire

What to wear: Hopefully it will not rain but be prepared just in case. It is a windy road so bring warm clothes.

How long: 2 hours.

Who to bring: Please try to bring as many people as you can! Numbers are very important for the visual aspect of this action.

Why: The IPSC is organising this protest because CRH owns 25% of the Israeli company Mashav Initiative and Development Ltd which, in turn, owns Israel’s sole cement producer Nesher Cement Enterprises Ltd. Nesher provide up to 90% of all cement sold in Israel, including cement used in the construction of Israel’s illegal separation wall in Palestine and illegal settlements and checkpoints. We are calling on CRH to end its shameful investment in Israel and to stop profiting from the occupation of Palestine by divesting from its Israeli interests.

For the past two years the issue of CRH’s investment in Israel dominated the AGM proceedings and press coverage of the event. We want to repeat that, as CRH, like any business, do not like any negative publicity so it is vital that we highlight it.
