3.  21st-22nd April, The 4th Annual ‘Minor Details’ Film Festival – Central Hotel Dublin [with proceeds going to Irish Anti-War Movement].

4th ANNUAL “MINOR DETAILS” FILM FESTIVAL
"Military Coups – won’t be forgotten, won’t be forgiven"

This year we will not hold the festival in Castleknock but more centrally in Central Hotel, Exchequer Street, Dublin 2.

The theme for 2012 is "Military Coups – won’t be forgotten, won’t be forgiven!"

As the 2 remaining generals Kenan Evren (Chief of the General Staff) and Tahsin Sahinkaya (Head of Air force) from 1980 Turkish coup d’état will be on trial for the first time (in a civilian court), this weekend will be an "artistic" celebration of anti-militarism, civilian liberties, democracy and freedom.

The trial starts on 4th April 2012 in Turkey. This trial became possible after the 2011 referendum on constitutional changes were voted in. In the original post coup Constitution of 1982, the Junta leaders had ensured that they were protected from any future prosecution and liability/responsibility.

Referendum of 2011 was a very progressive step for the people of Turkey and a strong message to the rest of the world’s military dictators. It was also a very positive message to the people of the world who suffered military coups in their own countries such as Thailand, Paraguay, Greece, Somalia, Bolivia, Chile, Cyprus and Egypt among many others…

The festival will not focus just on 1980 Turkish coup. There will be films from other countries. (See below for the program…).

This will be an "artistic" celebration of anti-militarism, civilian liberties, democracy and freedom.

The International (Beynelmilel) is a 2006 Turkish comedy-drama film, directed by Muharrem Gülmez and Sırrı Süreyya Önder, about a group of local musicians preparing to play at a large military parade in a small town near Adana, Turkey. The film, which went on general release across Turkey on December 29, 2006, won awards at film festivals in Adana, Ankara, Istanbul and Thessalonika.

Missing is a 1982 American drama film directed by Costa Gavras, and starring Jack Lemmon, Sissy Spacek, Melanie Mayron, John Shea, Charles Cioffi and Janice Rule. It is based on the true story of American journalist Charles Horman, who disappeared in the bloody aftermath of the US-backed Chilean coup of 1973 that deposed leftist President Salvador Allende.
The film also won the Palme d’Or (Golden Palm) at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival,

Yol ("The Road") is a 1982 Yılmaz Güney film. The screenplay was written by Yılmaz Güney, and it was directed by his assistant Şerif Gören, who strictly followed Güney’s instructions, as Güney was in prison at the time. Later, when Güney escaped from prison, he took the negatives of the film and edited it in Switzerland.[citation needed] The film is a portrait of Turkey in the aftermath of the 1980 Turkish coup d’état: its people and its authorities are shown via the stories of five prisoners given a week’s home leave. The film won the Palme d’Or (Golden Palm) at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival,

Vizontele is a 2001 Turkish comedy-drama film, written and directed by Yılmaz Erdoğan and co-directed by Ömer Faruk Sorak, based on the writer-director’s childhood memories of the arrival of the first television to his village in the late 70’s. A sequel, entitled Vizontele Tuuba, involving the director and most of the original cast followed in 2004.

Vizontele Tuuba is a 2004 Turkish comedy-drama film, written and directed by Yılmaz Erdoğan, based on the writer-director’s childhood memories of the last summer of his childhood in village in 1980. The film, which went on nationwide release on January 23, 2004, was a sequel to the highly successful Vizontele (2001).

Z is a 1969 French language political thriller directed by Costa Gavras, with a screenplay by Gavras and Jorge Semprún, based on the 1966 novel of the same name by Vassilis Vassilikos. The film presents a thinly fictionalized account of the events surrounding the assassination of democratic Greek politician Grigoris Lambrakis in 1963. With its satirical view of Greek politics, its dark sense of humor, and its downbeat ending, the film captures the outrage about the military dictatorship that ruled Greece at the time of its making

Salvador is a 1986 war drama film which tells the story of an American journalist in El Salvador covering the Salvadoran civil war. While trying to get footage, he becomes entangled with both leftist guerrillas and the right wing military. It stars James Woods, James Belushi, Michael Murphy, John Savage, Elpidia Carrillo, Tony Plana, Cynthia Gibb, Juan Fernandez and José Carlos Ruiz.

Turtles Can Fly (Kurdish: Kûsî Jî Dikarin Bifirin) is a 2004 film written and directed by the Kurdish Iranian filmmaker Bahman Ghobadi, with notable theme music composed by Hossein Alizadeh. It was the first film to be made in Iraq after the fall of Saddam Hussein.
Turtles Can Fly does not, as some expected, portray the United States in a negative light. However, it makes a very clear statement that a self-appointed position as liberators is skewed and false. Many scenes reinforce this; Satellite will be racing around after one tragedy or another, and the US tanks just roll past, indifferent. This is not a feel-good movie. It is disturbing, haunting, troubling, and heart-breaking. However, it also opens a window on a culture few people know about: Iraq under Saddam, specifically, the lives of war-torn children in pre-invasion Kurdistan. This movie gives names and faces to Iraqis, and portrays the US as children on the ground saw it. It is also frequently witty and endearing.
